October 25, 2009

The long drive back has begun. Breaking the trip home in 500+ mile days, Julian and I are scheduled to be back in California on Thursday.

The Atlantic

October 22, 2009

The day was getting late, and it was bitter cold without my gloves. The sun was not sure if it wanted to hide for the rest of the day or still stay out and shine. Regardless, today was the day. I touched ocean.

October 19, 2009

I met a guy today who had a tough start in life.

Meet Arthur

October 14, 2009

Today, I met a super volunteer...Arthur. In fact, today was Arthur's 15th anniversary of volunteering at New York organization that in 2008 had 48,000 other great volunteers (like Arthur) who participated in one project or another.

October 9, 2009

I really enjoyed meeting a group of truly hard-working, passionate, and visionary Philadelphians. Greater Philadelphia Cares treated me wonderfully, and the conversations and organizations I shared today were memorable.

Confluence, PA

September 25, 2009

I'll never forget Confluence, PA.

First off, it's a beautiful little town tucked in the valley right along the Great Allegheny Passage Trail. Some of these small towns look like they are straight from a movie set where it seems everything is perfect. It's hard not to feel great when you find a rest spot in one of them.

Except Confluence, PA had a small quirk. Everything wasn't quite so perfect.

They had no cell coverage at all.

Pittsburgh...and the G-20

September 24, 2009...

The city of Pittsburgh seemed as if it was in lockdown. Law enforcement and military vehicles were everywhere. Honestly, it seemed hard to believe I was even in the United States anymore.

Three day

September 20, 2009...

Ohio to West Virginia to Pennsylvania.

All in one day. It helped that my pedaling jaunt through West Virginia was only about 15 miles. But still, it sounds good.

Eli...and Wheeling

September 19, 2009...

Today, I had two memorable experiences.

First, I bought a blackberry pie from Eli Hersenberger. He was selling homemade baskets and baked goods next to a gas station near Old Washington, Ohio. Eli was 61...had 19 kids...and 72 grandkids.
