May 23, 2009...
Have you felt it? Do you live in it? It seems many people do...and it's a crazy, unproductive place where focus seems sometimes impossible.
"Chaos" is the place where your mind is just constantly racing and there never seems to be enough time to do anything...let alone everything.
"Chaos" is the place where we never seem to move forward...but are constantly just trying to survive day-to-day.
"Chaos" is the place where we are constantly pushed and pulled by other people and events and just don't seem to be in charge of our own lives.
Can you relate? Have you ever visited?
So...how do we escape?
Here are a few things I do:
1. I slow down. I know slowing down doesn't seem reasonable in a moment of chaos...but when I do slow down, it gives me a chance to slow my brain and body, and to get present with the moment. Being present allows me to focus.
2. I breathe. I take a few deep breaths and wash away whatever is racing through my brain. I breathe...deeply...over and over. I get my body to relax. My mind will follow.
3. I grab a pen and paper. I then list all the things I need to do and the length of time it will take me to complete each. I then prioritize the "To Do" list and fit them into an hour-by-hour time schedule for the day. I have learned to always allot more time to complete each item then I initially thought.
4. I then work each item on my list...hour-by-hour...item-by-item.
At the end of the day, I more than likely did not accomplish everything, but I undoubtedly made substantial progress.
What's most important, though, is that I began to give order and make sense of what once existed as chaos.
Breathe. Plan. Work your plan.
That's how you regain control.
That's how you bring order to chaos.
